How To remove custom roller shade blinds.

Last updated: June 23, 2025

To remove custom roller shade blinds, the primary task is to disengage the brackets that hold the headrail (the metal or plastic bar at the top of the shade) in place. The exact method depends on the specific type of mounting brackets used by the manufacturer.

Tools Needed

Sturdy step ladder or stool

Flathead screwdriver (most common tool for this job)

Phillips-head screwdriver (less common, but useful to have on hand)

Preparation

Raise the shade completely: Use the chain or spring-loaded mechanism to roll the shade all the way up into the headrail.

Use a ladder safely: Position your ladder securely to reach the top of the window frame where the brackets are installed.

Remove any valance (optional): If a decorative cover is snapped onto the front of the headrail, gently pry it off to expose the mounting hardware.

The Removal Process

Most custom roller shades use one of two main types of brackets:

Method 1: Spring-Clip Brackets (Most Common)

This type of bracket often features a small, flexible clip that holds the back of the headrail.

Locate the clips: Identify the brackets at the ends and sometimes in the middle of the headrail. You will see a flexible metal or plastic tab that snaps over the back edge of the headrail.

Disengage the clips: Insert the tip of a flathead screwdriver under the bottom edge of the clip.

Gently pry upward/outward: While supporting the weight of the shade with one hand, gently push or pry the clip away from the headrail with the screwdriver.

Lower the shade: Once all clips are disengaged, the headrail will release, allowing you to carefully lower the entire shade assembly.

Method 2: "Push and Tilt" Brackets

Some brackets are designed to be released by applying pressure in a specific direction.

Locate the brackets: Observe the brackets holding the headrail.

Push and tilt: With one hand firmly gripping the headrail, use your other hand to push the entire headrail firmly back toward the window frame.

Tilt the front down: While maintaining the backward pressure, tilt the front edge of the headrail downward. This motion should release it from the bracket clips.

Lower the shade: Carefully lower the shade once it is free.

Method 3: Pin-Style Brackets (For shades without a headrail box)

If your shade uses a simple pin mechanism (often one round pin and one flat pin):

Locate the pin: Identify the spring-loaded, round pin end (usually the side opposite the control chain).

Push to compress: Push the shade firmly toward the spring-loaded pin side to compress the pin and pull it free from its bracket.

Lower the other side: Once that pin is clear, the other side will simply drop out of its open-ended bracket.

Final Step: Mounting Hardware

After the shade is down, use your screwdriver to remove the brackets from the window frame or wall. Store the hardware safely if you plan to reinstall the shades later.
